Tips for Success: Read your labels. Watch out for hidden carbs; to calculate the grams of carbs that impact your blood sugar, subtract the number of grams of dietary fiber from the total number of carb grams. Also double-check serving sizes on labels; some foods and drinks are actually two or more servings, so you need to add in those extra carbs and calories.

Cure Your Summer Cravings with Low Carb Swaps

July 24, 2019

Summer’s in full swing, which means it feels natural to relax the rules, whether you’re skipping the office on Fridays to “work from home” or letting the kids stay up far past their normal bedtimes. Meals become a chill affair, where lunches are munched poolside and happy hour evolves into dinner. Suddenly it’s easy to indulge your cravings for anything crunchy, salty, sweet or fried, because why not? It’s summer!  Fortunately, you can enjoy summer favorites like juicy burgers (minus the bun) or grilled steak, while fresh and delicious vegetables and fruit in season just seem to taste better. Even a cookout featuring fresh lobster dunked in butter and grilled corn on the cob drizzled with lime-cilantro butter is perfectly appropriate, yet incredibly decadent.

Here my low carb swaps for some other tempting summertime treats you might encounter:

Low Carb Swaps for Happy Hour Nachos and Margaritas

Swap your chips for slices of jicama or baked low carb tortilla triangles and dip them in Guacamole

You can also indulge your nacho fix by swapping them for Crispy Nacho Chicken Thighs

Swap that sugary margarita for this refreshing low carb frozen margarita recipe

Low Carb Swaps for Pizza and Ice Cream

You can still have your pizza and eat it too when you swap it for low carb Pizza Margherita, where almond and Parmesan pizza crust subs in for high carb pizza dough.

You scream, I scream, we all scream for ice cream, especially when it’s Vanilla Chai Keto Ice Cream or Orange Vanilla Keto Ice Cream

Barbecue Ribs and Coleslaw

It’s a sad summertime truth that barbecue sauce can be a sneaky source of hidden sugars, but you can enjoy low carb Glazed Baby Back Ribs or Chili Maple Mustard Ribs without guilt.

Swap traditional coleslaw (the dressing is also deceptively high in sugar) for this low carb Classic Coleslaw recipe

Low Carb Swaps for Food Truck Favorites

Food trucks are everywhere in the summer, and often feature a tasty International selection of potentially high carb delicacies. You can cure your cravings for food truck fare with these low carb swaps:

Swap fish tacos and their floury tortillas for these low carb Soft Mahi-Mahi Tacos

Go for a lower carb taste of the Caribbean with Jamaican Jerked Beef Steaks

Cheesy quesadillas are quick food truck finger food. Try these low carb Baked Quesadillas, which use low carb tortillas.

Finally, if you’ve caved in to a few too many cravings and feel the pounds start to sneak back, there’s no time better than the present for me to show you how to survive a diet slip-up.
