4 Summer Low Carb Travel Tips | Atkins

Colette's Blog

August is often considered the last official month of summer. Whether you’re heading out on a road trip or flying the friendly skies, I have all the information you need to stick to your low carb lifestyle.

To start, when I travel, snacking is my secret to success. Although I might not have access to regular meals, I still try to eat every three to four hours, even if it’s as simple as a handful of almonds or an Atkins bar. And I always drink plenty of water. That way I’m not ravenously hungry, or worse yet; hangry, when I arrive at my destination.

  • What to eat on the fly. You are at the mercy of whatever there is to eat at the airport or in the air. Fortunately, airport food has gotten better, and you can usually grab a salad with some protein on it, as well as almonds, pieces of fruit, string cheese and hard-boiled eggs. I always travel with Atkins bars, which are perfectly portable low carb snacks.
  • What to eat on the road. When you hit the highway, you have more options, since you can pack a cooler with both perishable and non-perishable snacks, plus you can stop along the way to fill up on ice and more snacks. And you can’t go wrong when you pack your cooler with these 15 low carb road trip snacks.
  • Know your fast food facts. Whether you’re in a plane, train or automobile, it’s likely you’ll encounter fast food wherever you go, but if you follow these low carb fast food tips, you’ll be able to make the right choices.
  • Relax the rules… a little. It’s vacation, right? Part of the fun of traveling is enjoying delicious regional food once you reach your destination. You can savor your favorite foods without too much guilt if you up your activity level and make sure you have plenty of low carb snacks on hand to keep your hunger under control.

Happy (low carb) travels!
