How are Net Carbs Calculated?

INGREDIENTS

  • 0.25 cup Wheat Bran (Crude)
  • 1.13 cup Whole Grain Soy Flour
  • 0.6666 cup Vanilla Whey Protein
  • 0.25 cup Organic 100% Whole Ground Golden Flaxseed Meal
  • 0.575 cup Vital Wheat Gluten Flour

DIRECTIONS

It is not necessary to use vanilla flavored whey protein powder, unflavored is ideal but the vanilla will not contribute much flavor to the mix so if it is what you have on hand, use it.  

  1. Combine all ingredients and mix thoroughly.  Use immediately or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.  Each recipe makes 9 servings or 3 cups.  Each serving size is 1/3 cup.

How to Calculate Net Carbs

In order to calculate Net Carbs of any whole food item, it's a simple calculation based on the Nutrition Facts panel:

Total Carbohydrates - (Minus) Dietary Fiber = (Equals) Net Carbs

For low carb products sweetened with sugar alcohols (ie: glycerin, maltitol, etc), refer to the Nutrition Facts panel of the product:

Total Carbohydrates - (Minus) Dietary Fiber - (Minus) Sugar alcohol = Net carbs

This reflects the fact that Dietary Fiber doesn't impact blood sugar levels. Sugar alcohols also have a negligible impact on blood sugar, they too are subtracted from total carbs to yield the Net Carb count.
