Before Atkins and Living With Atkins

It’s been almost two years since I’ve started on my low-carb journey with Atkins, and I couldn’t be happier with how this way of eating has become a part of my life. In the beginning, now that I think back, my goals were probably more short-term in that I just wanted to feel and look better while juggling the demands of two young kids and a busy career. When you are low on energy and sleep, and you feel like you are being tugged in so many directions, sometimes it seems impossible to put yourself first. This was what I thought “before” Atkins. And now? I know if I spend a little time taking care of myself by eating right and exercising, it’s not just about fitting in my favorite pair of jeans. I have more energy, I sleep better, and I have so much more to give in all areas of my life. Here are a couple other things I have learned during my journey with Atkins:

Before Atkins: I didn’t have a plan, which meant I often resorted to eating whatever food was on hand, snacking off my kids’ plates and overindulging at restaurants.

With Atkins: I always have a plan. I know what foods make me feel good and keep my hunger satisfied. I always have my favorite go-to low-carb snacks and meals on hand, and even if I’m eating out at a restaurant, I can almost always find plenty of options on the menu that I can enjoy without guilt.

Before Atkins: I had the mentality that everyone had to eat separate meals. My kids got their “kids” food, and I felt like I had to deprive myself while I watched my husband indulge in pasta or a juicy burger.

With Atkins: There are so many delicious meals that we love to cook and eat together as a family. We pick one or two favorite recipes when we have time, and my kids have so much fun picking out their favorite vegetables to go with grilled fish, poultry, turkey burgers or more.

Before Atkins: It was “all or nothing” for me. Either I had to eat “perfectly”, or I made myself feel so guilty for taking a bite of a cookie that sometimes that meant I would just decide to throw in the towel and eat three more cookies.

With Atkins: I am realistic. If I choose to treat myself to an evening of homemade pasta or I indulge my sweet tooth with a dessert during a special dinner out, it is not the end of the world. I know I can enjoy these moments, because Atkins is a lifestyle for me. You can be sure that I will have my next low-carb meal or snack planned, and I’ll keep my motivation up by pushing myself a little harder in my next workout.
