The All-New Atkins Advantage Book
Stuart Trager, MD and Colette Heimowitz, MSc, two long-time supporters of the Atkins Advantage, have expanded on the basic principles of the Atkins Nutritional Approach and designed a thoroughly modernized, updated, streamlined and gorgeous program. It's called "The All-New Atkins Advantage", (St. Martin's Press, 2008) and we think it deserves a place on your library shelf.
Actually, your copy won't spend much time on anyone's shelf. That's because you will be using it. It's chock full of useful information, food tips, eating plans and actual exercise descriptions with easy to follow illustrations, and is so beautifully laid out and eminently readable that it's literally hard to put down.
We don't want to give away the secrets of this terrific volume, but suffice it to say it demolishes many of the myths that persist about "doing" Atkins, such as the (wrong) idea that it makes you tired, that as long as something says "low-carb" on the label it's probably fine (wrong again), or that only men lose weight on Atkins (ditto).
It's a great reference edition that explains the five basic principles of the all-new Atkins Advantage program with clarity and wit, and provides a step-by-step 12 week program to get you in the best shape of your life. The exercise section is particularly worth noting- it's easy to get started, the illustrations are crystal clear, and the program is step-wise, building on your previous successes. (In fact, the exercise diagrams and how-to instructions are so good they're worth the price of admission by themselves.)
If you've ever had the slightest question about how to "do" Atkins, this book is for you. And if you've ever had a question about some of the terms- like net carbs, or induction- this book will clear it all up for you. Best of all, the authors have written eloquently about issues like motivation and lifelong maintenance.
The introduction says it best: "People come to Atkins for weight loss, but they gain something more: empowerment".
