Healthy Nutrition Anytime, Anywhere
Good nutrition is easy to maintain at home. But when you're on the go, it can be a challenge. How can you balance a healthy diet with the realities of day-to-day life? Let Atkins® help you set up a strategy so you can stay on track under any circumstances!
The Healthy Eating Mantra: Five Basics to Remember
![]() | The first and best key to maintaining good nutrition anywhere is simple: Remember the five fundamental principles of healthy eating. No matter where you eat, seek foods that are:
|
- Free from added sugars - Added sugar is the enemy of any healthy diet. Avoid high fructose corn syrup, raw sugar, brown sugar and sucrose–and minimize your intake of sugar alcohols, too!
- Free from trans fats - Research links trans fats to heart disease, diabetes, breast cancer and asthma, as well as other illnesses. Always refer to the nutrition facts panel and the ingredient list. If a product lists hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, avoid it–it contains trans fats
Now let's take a quick look at some other healthy eating tips.
Eating Out, Eating Healthy
When you're planning to eat a meal away from home, be sure to plan ahead. Below are some great tips to help you maintain a nutritionally sound meal plan wherever you go.
- Dining at a restaurant? Vegetables and fruits are a fiber- and nutrient-rich, smart-carb alternative to pasta or potatoes, which are sure to raise your glycemic levels and cause spikes in blood sugar and troughs in energy levels.
Traveling? Plan ahead as much as possible. Go online or call the hotel to locate a convenient grocery store where you can buy healthy foods. Most hotels offer a fridge and a microwave in your room, or can supply them for a nominal charge. For easy on-the-go option, take along some Atkins Advantage™ or Morning Start™ bars; they're protein-packed and very satisfying.
Snacking for Health
Snacking can derail even the healthiest eating plan. A cookie here, a bag of chips there, and suddenly your blood sugar is spiking and your intake of trans fat has increased significantly in just one fifteen minute break. Healthy snacking, however, is both possible and an important part of any healthy nutrition plan. Below are some smart snack ideas to keep you on track.

- Keep good snacks within reach. Stock a few Atkins Advantage bars in your bag or in a basket near your front door so you can grab them and go. Swap out the candy jar on your desk for an Atkins Advantage Fudge Brownie Caramel Bar.
- Try fresh fruit–like blueberries or strawberries–with whole milk, cottage cheese, yogurt, or whipped cream. The fruit and protein combination keeps your blood sugar level for hours.
- Make your own trail mix by combining nuts, seeds, and sugar-free dried cranberries or cherries.
- Spread peanut butter or cheese on whole grain crackers – or a celery stick – for a filling afternoon snack.
- Start with an Atkins Advantage shake and blend it with some fresh fruit, crushed ice or a couple of tablespoons of sugar-free ice cream for a great-tasting milkshake.
- Headed to the gym? Fuel your body with some protein to keep your energy up throughout your workout and to give you the needed fuel to build and maintain lean muscle mass. Sip on an Atkins Advantage shake or bar on your way! And, don't forget to take in at least 15g of protein post workout as well.
TIP: Some major food companies are marketing their products as "healthy options" when they really don't meet your nutritional needs. Many of these products contain ingredients that you should avoid. Always read nutrition facts panels and ingredient labels and be savvy when buying pre-packaged "health" or "energy" bars. Avoid: Added sugars, trans fats, bleached white flour, high levels of sugar alcohols and other nutrient-empty ingredients. Seek out foods with protein, fiber, no added sugars, no trans fats, vitamins and minerals and smart carbs that provide you with the nutrition you need every day.
The Bottom Line
Once you get used to the idea of integrating healthier snacks into your daily routine, it becomes second nature. And once you see how full–and fulfilled–you feel, you'll know that you made the right choice when you decided to improve your eating habits.

Atkins: Don't Diet, Live It!
I started Atkins on July 24, 2004. Over the past 14 months my life has changed immeasurably. To call the Atkins plan a diet is NOT accurate. Atkins is a way of life and a way to live. In fact, I call it a "LiveIt," not a "Diet." My doctor says my health changes are literally miraculous. He says not only have I completely reset all of my risk factors for heart disease, I am in completely uncharted waters in terms of health benefits gained so far! I am no longer on blood pressure medicine. My sugar and cholesterol numbers have become normal. I also can exercise for hours! ...MY LIFE HAS CHANGED FOREVER! – Danny Jameson, Age 37, Gansevoort, NY
Atkins Products Used
I use all the Atkins products.
Love the Breakfast bars and shakes particularly.
Exercise Program
I swim a lot. Also, during the winter months when it's to cold to exercise outside, I join a gym. I do 3 days a week of weight training, and I do cardio on the off days.
