IN THE NEWS: APRIL 2006
Two big
nutrition trends are set to hit the mainstream in a big way. The first
is the consumer acceptance of the fact that antioxidants are important-
they’re potent protectors of health. You can read the full story of
antioxidants along with the latest findings by the Nielsen group here.
The
second is that consumers are becoming much more aware of the importance
of reducing sugar in their diet. Hardly a day goes by without a new
study signaling the connection between high sugar diets and a host of
degenerative diseases. According to Nielsen, low sugar products- such
as the entire line of Atkins Nutritionals foods, bars and shakes- have
all the potential to become a “blockbuster trend”. Read the full story here.
Conventional Food Companies Facing A Big Dilemma
According to a new report from JP Morgan, food companies are facing a
crisis. Do they continue to rake in the profits associated with less
healthy foods, or do they begin marketing foods that are better for you
but bring in less money? Click here.
More benefits of omega-3 fats!
The
Sunday Times magazine section (April 15, 2006) featured a full-length
story on the effects of omega-3 fatty acids on behavior. The thought
provoking article discussed research from the National Institutes of
Health showing that a diet higher in omega-3s was linked to a lower
rate of violence. According to the research, omega-3’s foster the
growth of neurons in the brain’s frontal cortex, the bit of gray matter
that controls impulsive behavior. Other research has demonstrated that
when omega-3’s were given to people with a history of substance abuse,
symptoms of anger fell by an astonishing 50 percent!
As Dr.
Bernard Gesch, one of the researchers looking into the connection
between omega-3’s and behavior said, “The brain needs to be nourished”.
And what better way than with a diet high in omega-3 fatty acids.
